When non-salary income may need extra tax planning.
Who Needs To Pay
Advance tax applies when your estimated tax for the year, after TDS and TCS, is ₹10,000 or more. Resident senior citizens without business or professional income are exempt.
Watch Non-Salary Income
Capital gains, interest, rent and freelance receipts can create tax outside payroll.
Estimate periodically instead of waiting for filing season.
Common triggers for salaried people are selling shares or mutual funds at a profit, large fixed deposit interest, rent from a second property, and consulting or freelance work alongside a job.
The Instalment Schedule
For most individuals, advance tax is due in four instalments: at least 15% of the year's tax by 15 June, 45% by 15 September, 75% by 15 December and 100% by 15 March. Shortfalls attract interest, generally 1% a month.
If a capital gain arises after an instalment date, interest for the earlier instalments is generally not charged on that gain, provided you pay the tax in the instalments that remain.
A Worked Example
You sell equity mutual fund units held for more than 12 months in October, with a gain of ₹3 lakh. The first ₹1.25 lakh of long-term gains is exempt, so ₹1.75 lakh is taxed at 12.5%, which is ₹21,875, or ₹22,750 with 4% cess.
Salary TDS doesn't cover this and it is above ₹10,000, so pay at least 75% of it by the December instalment and the rest by March. Had the units been held for 12 months or less, the whole ₹3 lakh would be short-term and taxed at 20%, or ₹62,400 with cess.
Freelance And Rental Income
If you take on consulting work, clients may deduct TDS on your fees, but that is often less than your actual tax at higher slabs. Add up the fees, subtract the TDS already deducted, and pay the balance as advance tax.
For rent, 30% of the net annual value is allowed as a standard deduction from house property income, and the rest is taxed at your slab rate.
Track Taxes Paid
Maintain TDS, TCS, advance tax and self-assessment tax records.
Use challan details while reconciling before filing.
Salaried people can also declare other income to the employer so it is included in salary TDS, and many employers accept this. It suits regular interest income more than a large one-off gain.
Verify Dates
Advance tax deadlines can matter, but always verify dates and applicability on the official portal or with a professional.
Use the Capital Gains Tax Calculator to estimate tax on each sale, the Income Tax Calculator for the total liability, and the ITR Return Calculator to check whether any balance is still due before filing.
