Professional Tax in Karnataka

Professional tax is state-specific, so salary estimates should use the right state assumption. Karnataka levies it on salaried employees above a monthly salary threshold, and employers deduct it from salary each month and pay it to the state.

How professional tax can affect salary estimates for Karnataka employees.

What It Is

Professional tax is a tax on professions, trades and employment levied by some states, including Karnataka. The Constitution caps it at ₹2,500 per person per year, so it is a small deduction, but it appears on every payslip.

Karnataka sets its own salary threshold and monthly amounts and has revised them over time. Check the current schedule with your payroll team or the state's commercial taxes department rather than relying on an old figure.

Why It Matters

Professional tax reduces take-home salary and may be deductible in old-regime tax calculations.

Employer payroll usually applies the state rule based on work location.

Under the old regime, professional tax paid is deducted from salary income. Under the new regime it isn't deductible, though it is still deducted from your pay.

How It Affects Your Numbers

The site's salary and TDS calculators use ₹2,400 a year as an editable default, equal to ₹200 a month. If your payslip shows a different amount, or a different deduction in one month, enter the actual annual total.

In the old regime, ₹2,400 of professional tax at the 30% slab cuts income tax by about ₹750 including cess. In the new regime it doesn't change the tax at all.

Before Using Defaults

Check your payslip or HR portal for the actual monthly professional tax amount.

Update the calculator if your state or employer treatment differs.

If you move states, the rule follows your work location, not your home state, and some states don't levy professional tax at all. Remote employees should check which location the employer has registered them under.

Reading Your Payslip

Professional tax usually appears as a separate line under deductions, often labelled PT. The annual total also appears in Form 16, where it is used in the old-regime calculation.

If the amount looks wrong, for example deducted for the wrong state after a transfer or deducted by two employers in the same month after a job change, raise it with payroll. The total for a year shouldn't exceed the ₹2,500 cap, and corrections are easier within the same year.

Self-Employed And Professionals

Freelancers, consultants and business owners in Karnataka may need to register and pay professional tax themselves. The requirements and amounts differ from those for employees, so check the state's official portal.
