What a rent receipt should usually include for HRA proof.
Rent receipt generator
Create a quick receipt line you can print or copy.
Received ₹25,000 from Aarav Sharma towards rent for Flat 402, Bengaluru for April 2026. Landlord: Meera Iyer.
Include The Basics
Tenant name, landlord name, rent amount, property address, rent period and receipt date should be visible.
Landlord PAN may be requested when rent crosses employer documentation thresholds. Many employers ask for it once annual rent goes above ₹1 lakh, roughly ₹8,333 a month; if the landlord has no PAN, a signed declaration is usually requested instead.
Add the payment mode and reference, such as a UPI or bank transfer ID, and the landlord's signature. A complete receipt makes verification faster.
A Simple Format
Received with thanks from [tenant name] the sum of ₹[amount] towards rent for [month and year] for the property at [full address], paid by [mode and reference] on [date]. Landlord: [name], PAN: [if applicable], signature and date.
Issue one receipt per month, or one per quarter if your employer accepts that. The amounts should match the rent agreement and your bank statements.
Keep Payment Proof
Bank transfer records, rent agreement and signed receipts make the claim easier to support.
Employer policy can ask for additional documents.
Paying by bank transfer or UPI creates a trail that backs up each receipt. Some employers ask for a revenue stamp on receipts for rent paid in cash; rules on receipt stamps vary, so follow your payroll team's instructions.
Common Mistakes
Receipts that don't match the agreement, rent paid to a spouse, receipts for a home you own and live in, and round-number receipts with no payment trail commonly lead to queries. Rent paid to a parent can be allowed when the parent owns the property and reports the rent as income.
If your monthly rent is above ₹50,000, you may have to deduct TDS on the rent yourself; check the current rate and process on the income tax portal.
How It Feeds HRA
HRA exemption, available only under the old regime, is the lowest of HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic, and 50% of basic in the eight listed cities or 40% elsewhere. Example: basic of ₹50,000 a month, HRA of ₹25,000 and rent of ₹30,000 in Pune gives an exemption of ₹25,000 a month, or ₹3 lakh a year.
Generate Receipts
Use the rent receipt generator to create monthly receipt previews, then print or save as needed.
Before collecting a year of receipts, check the exempt amount in the HRA Calculator and confirm in the Income Tax Calculator that the old regime actually works out lower for you.
