Understand cost to company and why it differs from take-home salary.
What CTC Includes
Fixed salary, employer contributions, benefits, insurance, gratuity provision and variable pay may all appear in CTC.
The exact structure varies by employer.
Typical lines are basic salary, HRA, special allowance, performance bonus, employer PF, gratuity provision, group health or life insurance premiums, and sometimes meal cards, fuel reimbursement or employer NPS.
Why Take-Home Is Lower
Income tax, employee PF, professional tax and non-cash benefits reduce monthly cash.
Variable pay may be paid later or only after performance conditions.
Employer PF and gratuity are counted in CTC but never reach your monthly salary. Gratuity is paid only when you leave, generally after five years of continuous service.
A Worked Example
Using the site's default breakup, a ₹12 lakh CTC has basic of ₹4.8 lakh, HRA of ₹2.4 lakh, a ₹96,000 bonus, ₹36,000 of employer PF and about ₹23,000 of gratuity provision. Gross salary is about ₹11.41 lakh.
Under the new regime, taxable salary stays under ₹12 lakh after the ₹75,000 standard deduction, so the rebate removes income tax. After ₹36,000 of employee PF and ₹2,400 of professional tax, take-home averages about ₹91,900 a month, or about ₹83,900 in months without the bonus.
Common Components Explained
Special allowance is the balancing figure that makes the breakup add up to CTC, and it is fully taxable. HRA is taxable under the new regime and partly exempt under the old regime if you pay rent. Reimbursements such as phone or fuel are paid against bills and may be tax-free within limits.
Group health insurance premiums are sometimes shown inside CTC and sometimes outside it. If they are inside, they reduce your cash without adding to take-home, so ask which applies.
Fixed Versus Variable
A target bonus is a possibility, not a guarantee. Check how it is calculated, when it is paid, whether it is pro-rated for joiners, and how much was actually paid in recent years before counting it.
Also check whether any part of the CTC is a one-time joining or retention payment. It won't repeat next year, so it shouldn't be treated as part of your regular pay.
How To Compare
Compare fixed annual cash, monthly in-hand salary and benefits separately.
When changing jobs, compare the new offer's fixed cash with your current fixed cash, not CTC with CTC. A large CTC jump can shrink if the new structure has more variable pay or a larger PF base.
Use the Take-Home Salary Calculator to convert CTC into monthly pay, the Salary Hike Calculator to measure the real increase, and the Gratuity Calculator to estimate the exit benefit.
